Lenard D. Moore, longtime author, editor, and haiku poet, (among many genres), is always at work on a new creative project. His latest, just released, is: One Window’s Light: A Collection of Haiku.
Moore, Associate Professor of English at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina– teaching among other courses, African-American Literature, including slave narratives– has brought together four other talented and skillful African-American poets who write insightful haiku about their cultural experience and heritage, among other haiku. They are members of the Carolina African-American Writers Collective that Moore founded.
Moore spent the past summer editing the Collection and writing the Introduction. L. Teresa Church, one of the poets, is a quilter whose artistic work is featured on the book’s front cover, photographed by Moore. The other poets are: Crystal Simone Smith, Gideon Young, and Sheila Smith McKoy.
This generous collection will, no doubt, serve as a substantial contribution to African-American Literature, and the haiku genre, in general.
Below, we include just a sampling of the evocative sensory poems with precise diction and imagery. They reveal poetic sensibilities and enlighten readers on the African-American perspective.
